The hills of Bakewell were alive with the sound of piping, as our boarders enjoyed another special theme boarding night, ‘Burns Night’. A traditional Scottish piper led the parade from Hargreaves Hall to the Dining Room (kindly organised by Harriet and Margot’s Mum), with everyone wearing their best tartan for the event. Mrs B read the Selkirk Grace in her authentic Scottish accent, before Chef Paul paraded the haggis around the dining hall, accompanied by Kal our Piper. Mr Mortimer, Emily, Isabella and Harry then read out the ‘Address to the Haggis’, before we all tucked into haggis, neeps and tatties, with all of our boarders at least trying a little piece of haggis and some devouring a lot of it! There was also Scotch broth to start and shortbread, before we finished with a toast to the wee laddies and lassies. With all tummies full, everyone headed to the sports hall for some Ceidhli dancing, led by Geoffrey and the Bracken Rigg Ceilidh band. The children danced into the night, learning Scottish reels and also stripping the willow. After a well deserved boarders’ staple of cocoa and crunchy toast, it was time for bed. Needless to say, none of our boarders needing any rocking to sleep! A huge thank you to everyone who helped and supported this event. What a memorable night it was! Our pupils were a credit to their school and families, and the following morning this lovely message pinged into Mrs B’s email inbox: Hello, I’d to thank you for having giving me the opportunity to play for the Burns night for the children. Those children were fabulous and will be a real credit to society in the future years. The evening was so lovely and such a great atmosphere. Many thanks once again Kal Vaikla The Derbyshire Piper
